Looking Glass Yarns was started by two local women in 2007 and has been a central part of the Santa Fe fiber community since. Both long-time knitters, Kay and Sheila learned how to knit from their mother when they were children. After retiring from their jobs, they embarked on a passion project - selling yarn! Between choosing beautiful fibers, buying local products from indie creators and creating a space for the community to come together, this business brought them immense joy. These core virtues have stayed a part of Looking Glass even today as the store shifts and evolves through the times.
In 2014, Looking Glass moved into its current home on 2nd street off of Cerillos. While this space offered abundant opportunity, it came shortly before Sheila moved away and Kay began to have some serious health challenges. Faced with a decision of how to keep the store running, Kay asked her husband Don if he would step in and help. Happily, Don brought his expertise in business and financial advising and got to work. Slowly over time, and as Kay became less able to run the store, Don took over more and more. By the end of 2018, Don was running the shop in its entirety.
Given these major transitions, the summer of 2020 hit Looking Glass especially hard. Like many small businesses, it struggled to stay open and only was able to survive due to the strength of its community and the help of relief programs. We are immensely grateful for this support and for how far we’ve come since! Today, we have triple the product, are offering classes and private lessons, and have thriving maker groups on Tuesdays and Sundays. We also won Best of Santa Fe 2nd Place for Best Craft Store last year and are in the running again this year! We love being a part of this community and creating a space for us all to come together and share in what we adore - creating beautiful objects with gorgeous yarn and lovely folks.
